We were in Costa Rica Jan of 1998. We loved it so much, we bought a time share for two weeks. We spent 10 days in Quepos, Manual Antonio. We had a four wheel drive and drove to Dominical.

It took about 2 hours to get there. We had no problem driving the roads in Costa Rica. In fact, I thought it was fun. Of course it takes much longer to get somewhere, but who cares. I loved the scenery along the way. Once we got there we had lunch on the beach.

The owner of the place where we had lunch introduced himself. He had just bought the place. Food was terrific. We had shrimp & rice. The owner was from California. He was tired of the fast pace of California and now lives in Dominical. He was a surfer. We hung out for awhile and then drove back to Quepos.

We stayed at the El Parador in Quepos. First Class Hotel. It was on a mountain with a breathtaking view. We went to Manual Antonio National Park. We hiked and swam. Positively the best.

We made a lot of friends in Costa Rica. We are from the east coast. Most people we met were from the west coast. We chartered a boat a went fishing. Caught 4 sail fish in one day. It was the best fishing trip we ever did, and we have fished in Jamaica and Hawaii. Nothing could compare to this.

I don't know why people are discouraged from renting a 4 wheel drive and exploring on their own. It was one of the best parts of the trip.

We are going back this January for two weeks. Hope to see more places. Did you ever have a dish called Ceviche? Marinated white fish in lime juice with onions, peppers, cilantro. Can't wait to go back just for that dish.

We loved the orange limes. They were the best limes ever. Cut them open and they were orange in the middle. Went on a great jet ski trip. About 4 hours long.

We skied all the way around to Antonio National Park. Ran in to schools of dolphins. It was a lot of fun. Going to do it again when we go back. Also, again, let me say that renting the car was a highlight of our trip. We met so many people by giving them rides.

Also, I never felt any danger while driving around. I know you have to be aware and careful, no matter where you travel these days, but I can honestly say that I never was intimidated while traveling.

Also, We met a nurse from california who spent her last 2 days at our hotel. She traveled alone for 5 weeks. Said she had the time of her life, and I never heard her mention any problems.

Even though taxi service is great, just hopping into the car and taking off was freedom to travel when and where you wanted to. Also, we stopped at a lot of places along the way. I don't think you could do this travelling by bus. The roads are not as bad as you may think. You just have to take your time, but who's in a hurry anyway.

Got a story or a question about Costa Rica? We want to hear from you. Drop us a note.
