Cayucos, just off Hwy 1 on the central coast of California, is 225 miles north of Los Angeles and 230 miles south of San Francisco. The fact that Hwy 1 skirts the town rather than going right through the middle of town is probably why Cayucos still retains it's flavor as a 50's kind of California beach town.

The first time I ever saw Cayucos was when I was driving home from Hearrst Castle on world famous Hwy 1. I wasn't in any great rush. I saw the exit for Cayucos, which I'd driven past many times, and decided to take the exit. In a few minutes, I was back in the 50's. I was seeing a town that seemed to be perfectly comfortable with just hanging out at the beach with no pretentious high rise hotels or "members only" beach resorts.

I parked my car, no big deal to find a parking space, and walked out onto a broad mile long sandy beach. Waves from the Pacific Ocean rolled in gently, but I imagined that in a winter storm the surf could really get to pounding on this beach.

What's there to do here? Well, the main thing is to hang out at the beach. If you like to fish, the pier offers free fishing with no license required. Kayaks can also be rented if you inclined to do a little offshore exploration. Hearst Castle is only 22 miles to the north. But, you know what, Cayucos is really a place to just come and enjoy the beach and the ocean.
